Understand your license scope

An alarm company license and an installer license do different jobs.

If you want to get an alarm system installer license in Texas, first decide whether you are joining a licensed company as a technician or applying for your own business. A course certificate and an individual license do not replace a company's authorization.

The business license

A business offering regulated alarm services needs the appropriate DPS company license and authorized service scope. A qualified company representative provides actual oversight and must satisfy the experience, examination and company role requirements.

The individual installer license

Alarm Systems Installer is an individual DPS license type. People doing regulated installation work need the appropriate authorization and affiliation with a licensed company, subject to applicable rules and exemptions. We help you understand the paperwork for your role.

Training and other requirements

Alarm installers have applicable initial training, supervision and continuing education requirements. Fire alarm systems, electrical work and certain other services can be regulated separately. This program focuses on private security licensing; we review the limits before you take a job.

DPS determines eligibility, approved services and license issuance. Use its current guidance to confirm the requirements for your situation.

Your path through TOPS

From application plan to licensed work.

STEP 01

Choose the right starting point

Tell us about your experience, company structure and planned intrusion alarm work. We review whether the program fits your business and which company and individual applications are needed.

STEP 02

Establish a qualifying arrangement

The representative must be a real qualifying individual with actual oversight. For a company entity, Texas rules require a qualifying officer role or at least 25% ownership as a partner or shareholder. Sole proprietors must qualify personally. We do not offer a borrowed license.

STEP 03

Complete the TOPS process

We guide preparation of the company's filings, individual applications, affiliations and supporting records. You submit to TOPS and complete applicable fingerprints, insurance, training and fees. The representative must meet DPS experience requirements and pass the required examination.

STEP 04

Work within the issued licenses

Required approvals come before regulated work. Monthly billing and our 24-month term begin when your business license is issued. We support professional installation and help you document relevant experience. A future change of representative requires eligibility and DPS approval.

Build practical alarm installation skills.

Study the applicable Texas rules alongside intrusion alarm fundamentals, safe installation, testing, documentation and customer instruction. Match initial and continuing education courses to your current individual license requirements. Company representative examination preparation is a separate step from installer training.

Training providers are independent. Check current approval, prerequisites, availability and fees before purchasing a course.

Questions before you get started.

Do I need to pass an exam to install alarms?

The qualifying company representative must satisfy the DPS experience and examination requirements. Individual installer qualifications and training are separate. We help you identify what applies to your role instead of treating every technician as a company representative.

Does this cover fire alarm licensing?

Fire alarm services can require separate authorization under other Texas rules. Do not treat an alarm systems company license as permission to perform every type of fire, electrical or life safety work. We review the proposed services and direct you to the relevant authority.

When do the monthly payments start?

The $375 setup fee applies at enrollment. The $375 monthly program fee and the 24-month term start when your business license is issued, not while the application is pending. State fees, courses, insurance and other outside expenses are separate.

One clear program

Licensing help. Two years of ongoing support.

Our program is $375 at setup and $375 per month for 24 months, for a total program cost of $9,375. Monthly billing and the two-year term begin on the day your business license is issued. State application and examination fees, fingerprints, courses, insurance and other outside costs are separate and confirmed in your agreement.

Briva Alarm is a service of Briva Alarm & Voice, LLC, a licensed Texas Class B security company. We review eligibility and the lawful representative arrangement before enrollment. Your company obtains its own license at the start of operations; successful completion of the program does not guarantee future DPS approval.
