Understand your license scope

Do you need a security camera license in Texas?

Texas DPS explains that companies selling or installing cameras that transmit or store images over a computer network fall within the alarm system company provisions of Chapter 1702. Network experience does not replace the required security authorization.

Camera work and alarm company licensing

The phrase “security camera license in Texas” often describes work regulated through alarm system company licensing. Plan for the appropriate company license with approved alarm services; do not assume there is one separate, universal CCTV business license.

People need the appropriate authorization

Company licensing and individual licensing are different. Individuals doing regulated installation work need the applicable DPS license and company affiliation, subject to the rules and exemptions that apply to their role. We help identify the right applications for your team.

Approval comes before regulated work

A pending TOPS application is not approval to install. Your business must wait for the required license and your personnel must have the required authorization. Access control, locksmith work and fire systems need their own scope review.

DPS determines eligibility, approved services and license issuance. Use its current guidance to confirm the requirements for your situation.

Your path through TOPS

From application plan to licensed work.

STEP 01

Describe the camera work

Share the systems you plan to sell, install or service: IP cameras, NVRs, remote viewing, commercial CCTV or integrated security. We help determine the regulated service scope and personnel requirements.

STEP 02

Review your representative arrangement

A qualified company representative needs the required verifiable experience and DPS examination for the service category, a permitted company role and actual oversight. An entity's representative must be a qualifying officer or a partner or shareholder with at least 25% ownership. Sole proprietors must qualify personally.

STEP 03

Build the TOPS applications

We guide your business and individual paperwork, affiliations and supporting documents. You submit to TOPS and complete applicable fingerprints, insurance, training and fees. DPS reviews the filings and issues the licenses.

STEP 04

Operate professionally and build experience

Begin regulated work only after the required approvals. Our 24-month term begins on business license issuance, with ongoing support for the company. Keep accurate project and employment records as you work toward meeting representative qualifications yourself; time alone does not establish eligibility.

Learn the security side of network video.

Good camera work requires more than a working network connection. Build skills in coverage planning, image quality, recording and documentation, alongside the applicable alarm installer training. Confirm that a course meets the current Texas requirement you are trying to satisfy; technical education and licensing qualifications serve different purposes.

Training providers are independent. Check current approval, prerequisites, availability and fees before purchasing a course.

Questions before you get started.

Do IT companies need Texas licensing to install security cameras?

IT expertise does not remove a licensing requirement. DPS specifically places network video camera sales and installation within the alarm system company provisions. Review your exact services and any applicable exemption before taking regulated work.

Will my license also cover access control?

Some access control work can fall within alarm company authority under Texas law. The approved services, equipment and individual role still matter. We review access control separately so you understand the scope and any additional requirements.

Will I be able to qualify on my own after two years?

The program can help you build skills and verifiable experience, but completing 24 months does not guarantee eligibility. You must meet the applicable experience, role and examination requirements, and DPS must approve the representative change.

One clear program

Licensing help. Two years of ongoing support.

Our program is $375 at setup and $375 per month for 24 months, for a total program cost of $9,375. Monthly billing and the two-year term begin on the day your business license is issued. State application and examination fees, fingerprints, courses, insurance and other outside costs are separate and confirmed in your agreement.

Briva Alarm is a service of Briva Alarm & Voice, LLC, a licensed Texas Class B security company. We review eligibility and the lawful representative arrangement before enrollment. Your company obtains its own license at the start of operations; successful completion of the program does not guarantee future DPS approval.
